For the past few years workforce issues have been one of the Board’s identified strategic priorities. We continue to work closely with Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ), to the benefit of both organisations. At HWNZ’s request we have consulted with other key psychology organisations and it has been agreed that the Board will serve as the profession’s main conduit to HWNZ. Early priorities include sorting out the long-standing inconsistencies and unpredictability of Internship placements around the country and advising HWNZ on the roles psychologists could and should play in the workforce of the future. The Board also continues to emphasise the high quality and utility of the existing psychologist workforce.

HWNZ have announced that the Ministry of Health’s long-standing annual workforce surveys will no longer be conducted. Instead, HWNZ plan to measure specific labour market areas by accessing each profession’s Register to derive sample (anonymised) surveys to build a more usable data set for workforce planning purposes.

The most recent workforce survey to be reported (2009/2010) can be viewed here.
