In accordance with section 118(a) of the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, the Psychologists Board is required to prescribe the qualifications required for scopes of practice within the profession, and, for that purpose, to accredit and monitor educational institutions and degrees, courses of studies, or programmes.
The Board has prescribed qualifications for six scopes of practice, and currently monitors twenty courses of study and seven educational organisations, plus two agencies that provide supervision-to-registration schemes.
The Board has established an Accreditation Committee which carries out or oversees most accreditation activities on behalf of the Board. Each application for accreditation is reviewed by an expert Assessment Team appointed for that purpose. The Board greatly appreciates the willingness of senior academics and practitioners to serve on Assessment Teams, thereby ensuring that New Zealand’s training programmes are producing graduates who are competent to practise.
